I cleaned my dogs ear with ear solution and i notice some gunk come out i watched about 63 videos on youtibe i also learn dog ears are L shaped and i heard slushy sound when i massaged from outer ear, i also let my dog shake his head around and couple of times and then i cleaned out with cotton balls, i then clipped his nails and for this i watched a ton of videos also cause i didnt want to cut to short... the only thing i did not do is bathe him after his groom and well over the course of 2 days i have notice this

Could it be that his nails were sharp and he scratched himself and injured himself and now it is infected? I have benadine can i use that to clean the wound? I am taking him to the vet on my 2 hour lunch break today but need advice beforehand, sometimes i feel like vets scam you when they see you have a frenchie...

.... it is only the left ear that is like that

Looks infected to me but the vet will look inside ear to make sure tympanic membrane not perforated and just an outer ear infection. If it's middle ear infection your dog will need oral antibiotics.

So the vet said that they would have to do deep cleaning to make sure nothing was lodged in, said something about a tailfox? Which. Is like a litrle fuzzy plant... and i said that was weird because ive have had him in my house since i gotten him and because of puppy shots havent been completed, and the vet tech said it would be around 400 dollars to check and sedate him and do a deep cleaning and that either way i would have to do it at some point... and then the medicine he wanted to sell me was around 105 ... antibiotics and a type of prednisone along with ear cleaner a ointment and when i asked they didnt want to give me information( i am a CCMA and work in internal medicine) so i was asking so i can get it prescribed my by doctor... at the correct dosage but they didnt release me any information... which is sad because i looked up most "antibiotic" only that are at a low cost and get shipped within one day... so why wouldnt they give me my information if im paying for consult... lastly im probably never going there again... i was disappointed, im going to further my information and post progess pictures, wish me and donnie luck i will do my best and if anyone has information or has gone throught something like this please help me... ive been watching vet videos on youtube i know its not the same but i can study from it

They should have checked to see if the ear drum was perforated with an otoscope. Cephalexin dosage is 22-30 mg/kg every 12 hours, need to treat for 3 weeks. You might also want to give an oral antifungal fluconazole 10 mg/kg once daily with food for 3 weeks. Animax, Surolan, and Otomax are broad spectrum ear drops that can be prescribed by a vet. The whole problem could be caused by a food allergy so I would try putting dog on boiled chicken and rice for a week, and switching to a hypoallergenic dog food (such as Honest Kitchen Kindly base mix with your own added protein) gradually during that time.

The ear looks pretty bad so I would probably try a different vet. I really like Zymox otic drops with or without hydrocortisone for ears that aren't too bad.

Foxtail can be very painful ... I'd get to another vet and have something done to give some relief
bullmama you had this with one of your babies, right?

If possible, you can take to a different vet for a second opinion. If you are not comfortable with this current vet and don't like what they are telling you, find a new vet. Trust is very important to have with any kind of doctor.

Thanks to all those who have replied... i have been treating the wound my self for the past 2 days with benadine solution 10% povidone-iodine... and these are my results

Honestly when the vet told me foxtails i was completely thrown off, because my dog hasnt been outside since ive gotten him his last puppy shot is next week and soon can start taking him out on walks... this wound appears to be caused by nail trimming and was not filed down and he injuried him self

For future cleanings, Zymox is a good ear cleanser. I usually try to use it once a week on Jax's ears to keep them clean. You can soak up a cotton ball with it and wipe the ears and squeeze it so the solution gets in there.

It's better if dog will let you, to squirt it in and massage the dog's ears like Donnie originally posted. I'm glad the betadine is working. In future if you don't want to pay for Zymox ear drops or Zymox cleaner you can also try apple cider vinegar mixed 50:50 with witch hazel and squirt it in or spray it in.
