Rico is getting a nose job!

Aww poor Rico!! I'm just catching up and didn't realize he wasn't feeling well. Great news that he's slowly getting back to his usual silly self! His nose looks fantastic!! Way to go Rico!!

Awwww thank you so much! Yes, it was really rough there for a bit.... I honestly didn’t anticipate that type of situation, and truly thought that this was going to be a much quicker recovery than it has turned out to be.

It’s amazing how once they turn a corner for the better, it becomes so much better so quickly...

It’s also amazing how just like us humans, depression can set in when you’re not well, and a good friend can almost always cheer you up.... when Rico was recovered enough to have some light play, I took him to visit his best friend Rocco—a 16 year old pit bull, and INSTANTLY he went from feeling better, to 100% back to normal. It’s so interesting to see how socialization really impacts dogs.

Great work, Daddy! Glad to hear he has turned the proverbial corner!!!

Ok!!!!! Update time........Yesterday, I had another consultation—with a highly recommended vet. Rico and I fell in love with him and the staff (message me if you’re in NYC and looking for a vet, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND them).

Anyway, Rico was so good about letting him get down his throat, I was shocked... of course nothing is 100% clear until he’s anesthetized to be totally sure of what needs to be done—but he is fairly sure that his palate and tonsils are ok, and that it’s probably just the nares that need to be done. So the surgery is scheduled for Sept 7th. He spent a great deal of time listening to Rico get all excited and out of breath he couldn’t hear that common epiglottal vibration sound commonly associated with the soft palate, so we’re hoping for just the nose, but preparing for the whole brachycephalic package of nose, palate and tonsils—the surgery will be laser.

I am so relieved to have found him, and that Rico will be breathing better!

This little guy is absolutely adorable.

I LOVE Rico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is going to be mine in my next life. :haha:

Pupdate:

So yesterday, Rico just wasn’t right... he refused food and water all day long, and he was extremely lethargic, he hasn’t really been himself once since the surgery... his breathing was totally fine, but his nares were just as crusty. My greatest fear is aspiration pneumonia, and so I immediately called the surgeon—he’s on vacation until Friday. He was so kind though, to have me text photos of his nose, then he called my primary vet, ordered a blood panel, chest x rays etc. and paid for the entire visit. You just don’t find vets like this.... I adore him.

My primary vet took Rico in immediately, chest x rays were clear, blood work was excellent, gave him a shot of cerenia, put him on Prevacid, and we were done... he actually fought the x ray off so bad that he managed to pick a scab/crust off his nose, so his nose is now open (but the poor thing has a raw nose now).

We get home.... I put down food, he runs to it and gobbles it down like he was on death row about to go to the electric chair....

Moral of the story.... Rico knows how to milk it!

This is the face of regret on the way home when you milk it to the point of being tortured at the vet for no reason.

P.S. after all this, I popped one of his Prevacids myself hahahaha.

I would have been a wreck. Little stink pot.

PUPDATE!!!

Ok, so yesterday at the vet, we again ran though an entire blood test, including CBC, full body x rays... the works.

There is absolutely nothing that can be detected... which to me is good news and bad news. Good for obvious reasons, bad because I didn’t have an answer!

Anyway, they gave him another cerenia injection and sent me home with cerenia tablets. Since there is no infection, antibiotics would simply risk upsetting his stomach and make him even more likely to refuse food—anti inflammatories run the same risk.

As of that visit, the most important thing was to ensure he eats/drinks and doesn’t vomit for the risk of aspiration pneumonia.

The surgeon felt he may simply have had an adverse reaction to the long lasting pain med injection he received and it simply caused some alarming side effects such as the lethargy and refusal to eat.

Now here’s the really good news.... Rico is like night and day! He has a marked improvement in his interest to eat, his nares are now free of scabs, and he is considerably more energetic.

He certainly isn’t back to his bossy, tough guy self yet, but it’s a tremendous difference from how he was acting over the past week.

I’m keeping every finger and toe crossed for this continued improvement and his fast recovery!

Here’s a photo of his crust free nose!!!

Joe, I'm sorry to be monopolizing the forum, but I just read the entire thread - at least up to page 5 (Can't guarantee that I won't have more comments! Sorry!). OMG, I am so glad Rico is back to himself. I was a wreck for you!!! His nares are gorgeous. I am so envious and now it is behind you. Wish I could find a vet like you have around here. Frenchies are pretty rare around these parts.

Joeturbo26, how about some new pics of his nose? I would love to see where he is now.

P.S. Give him a nice spanking for worrying you - I love to spank Bambi's little butt. :luv:

Here’s my final pupdate!!!! And I’m so glad I can put this experience behind me!!!!!

Rico is doing AMAZING! His nose is totally scab and crust-less... he has made a huge turn around and I can 100% day this was the best thing I’ve ever done for him...

His breathing is hugely different. For a dog that was totally a “quiet frenchie” to begin with, meaning at rest he never snored or snorted... the ease in which he inhales and exhales is light years different. His ability to rebound from intense play has literally been 80% or more fast.... his likelihood of even panting has been cut in half I would say...

In conclusion if you’re contemplating this surgery because you feel your dog needs it, I would whole heartedly suggest doing it.

I don’t regret doing it with a laser, but I will say, that dogs done without a laser seem to have a better aesthetic outcome— Rico’s right nostril is slightly smaller than his left, but frankly I don’t care. I am glad he had no stitches, no cone... and I would choose laser again.

His nose has regained about 75% of the dark pigmentation, and hopefully will be totally colored up in a few more weeks.

Thank you everyone for your kind words of support on this thread!

Here’s a photo of him minutes ago!

OMG, these results are totally fabulous. I am going to show your post to my husband so he can ready your account first-hand. I know we need to have Bambi's nares done. She has so much difficulty breathing, even when at rest. I will take a picture to get everyone's opinion. We will have to find a vet we are comfortable with and who has experience in this area. I am so happy for Rico. He is a little peanut!

Looking good Rico!!

Thanks for sharing your journey. It is good learning. I'm sure others will benefit from it.

You may need to see the vet to determine if re-stiching is needed
