Wally has developed a problem where he's drooling on his right side of his mouth quite excessively. What's weird with Wally's drooling is that it happened maybe once every 3 months or so, and then progressively it started to happen more often. Now it's once a week and might get worse. Would this be a pain issue? I massaged his body to see if he would yelp but he doesn't. He eats with gusto and poops normally. His drool doesn't smell so I don't think it's a tooth or infection problem.

Would it be pain and he's just not yelping when I massage him because he's just a tough pup? He doesn't walk any differently, plays really rough with Uma, loves going on walks, etc. He does look out of sorts when he starts to drool but he does walk normally.

I plan on taking him to the vet on Friday but they're not Frenchie experts so I thought I would ask here and see if anyone has gone through something similar.

The only time I have experienced this was when Rico had his nose done... he literally couldn’t stop drooling.

The only things I can think would be associated with it, as it related to his surgery would be, pain or nausea.

Do you have any cerenia on hand? Maybe he’s nauseous and that will help... or maybe try a Pepcid? Wish I had a better answer, hope the Wallster feels better ASAP!

I know how weird that can be! Rico was like a waterfall...

Most likely pain... Cheli does this when his back bothers him. I keep Tramadol on hand for these situations.

Keep us posted

Hmmm...the only time Jax drools excessively is if he is anxious. Is Wally panting as well or just drooling? Have you peeked in his mouth to see if you can see anything, maybe something with his teeth?

I would definitely have a vet take a look and I would hope that any vet would be able to diagnose if there is something wrong.

I hope everything is okay and keep us posted!

It's the fact that the drool was happening so rarely but is happening more often that makes me think it's not his nose or nausea. That drool does look very familiar though. lol!

I am terrified it's a back issue. Did Cheli have surgery for his back? That will financially ruin me, but what I really want is Wally to be 100%.

He just drools, no panting. I have looked in his mouth and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. I did think that maybe he sometimes bites the inside of his mouth because he's so jowly. No smell of infection and no blood though.

If the vet can't find anything in his mouth then maybe I should get an x-ray done on his back, see if they can see anything.

Just an FYI, and I am sure every dog is different, but when Jax had the X-ray, it didn't show anything except for dried up discs. He had to have an MRI which is what showed the herniated disc.

Is Wally trembling or shaking at all?

I'm so sorry about Wally; that is such a worry. Could it be a tooth, seeing that he only seems to drool out of one side?

Good luck; I hope you get to the bottom of it and it is an easy fix.

No, physically he acts exactly the same. No limping or shaking or anything. Just drool.

No... we mange it with monthly laser sessions and Movoflex supplements

Ruggles, our English Bulldog drools excessively, we were told his huge jowls hold water which thickens and comes out as drool. He didn't start drooling until he was around 4 months old and it has gotten worse as he ages.

The thing that’s throwing me is that you said he seems a bit off when he’s drooling... could be a sort of transient seizure? Im not an expert, but I’ve heard of people “spacing out” for literally 10-15 seconds at a time, and it’s little very harmless seizures. I’d assume dogs can have them?

Then the being off worries me on his back. I know titans tell tale signs now, and even the slightest little weird behavior tells me “his back is going to start up, get the meds out.”

I hope he’s okay, maybe it’s just a weird thing! He’s a big weird bulldog, that’s always a possibility.

❤️❤️

Wally is quite spacey, but a lot of Frenchies are. :D

That's the part that worries me. But he could be looking extra sucky because I am making a fuss about the drool. My dogs are quite the actors when it comes to getting extra attention and cuddles. lol!

I massaged his spine, back and hips last night to see if he would flinch or pant and he just sat there enjoying the massage. He didn't drool at all last night and was very playful. I think it's his mouth or a gland issue. I'm taking him in to his vet tomorrow to get his mouth and teeth looked at.

He IS a weird bulldog! :D Maybe it's how he eats and drinks. I plan on getting him some new elevated bowls designed for Frenchie type dogs as he's a gulper when he eats and drinks.

Thank you to everyone for their replies! I will keep you posted on what the vet says.

Our six year old Sofi drools excessively out of one side of her mouth sometimes. We took her to our vet (who is wonderful) while Sofi was drooling. She checked her thoroughly and suggested it may be an allergic reaction to a plant. Sofi's "bouts" are sporadic.
She acts normally while drooling and is in excellent health.
Hopefully you've found the cause for Wally's drooling. :)

I am curious to see what the vet thinks. If it's not pain, then is it a seizure or just an allergy of some sort?

I actually had our app't cancelled. Our vet is a 24/7 emergency and they had 2 emergencies that day and I said I would reschedule.

However, I did talk to the vet on the phone and she said it does not sound like pain. She also said if it was a tooth the drooling wouldn't be so sporadic, it would get worse and worse. She said it could be allergies. She did suggest I get him elevated bowls in case he's getting an upset stomach by how he's eating (he's a gulper). She said I should monitor him for a week and if he drooled a lot in that time to bring him in. He hasn't drooled since I posted his problem here so I will keep an eye on him.

Thanks for all your help!

:whew:

I am so glad he seems better; hope it continues.

Give him a big kissie for all of us!

Sounds like Wally's better. Good to hear.
We just started using this bowl Elevated Bowl.webpfor our Sofi, because she makes a mess pushing her food out of the bowl.
It's designed to slow them down when they eat and the lip inside the bowl helps keep the food in.
It works!!
It can be used with or without the stand.
We have been elevating their feeding bowls for awhile now.
I know raising the food bowls is especially good for big dogs due to bloat, but I believe our little guys can benefit from it too.
If it's good for them, I'm all in!
By the way, that bowl cannot defy gravity, for some reason it showed up that way when I uploaded it.
It's on the floor!!
.
