Hello everyone,
I will keep this as short as possible. I am a new Frenchie owner. I got Chloe at the end of June and she has had diarrhea since the day I got her. It was soft serve at first then became bloody liquid. She is straining all the time to poop but nothing comes out except a few drops of blood and poop. I have taken her to the vet 6 times and animal hospital twice. I have gotten 3 fecal tests, a diagnostic blood and gi test, and a bile acid test. My vet says there is nothing she can do for her anymore considering all the tests came back normal. She referred me to a specialist which I can’t get into until 9/15. She is 4 months old and weighs 8 pounds. She has no interest in eating or drinking so I have been putting water and hills urgent care a/d in a syringe to feed her every couple hours. When I first got her she acted like a normal puppy except for the diarrhea. Today she just wants to sleep. She seems so weak. I am beyond frustrated and sad. I feel helpless. I have done everything that I can think of. I was just at the vet yesterday with her yet again and they say physically she looks fine and do not know what is causing the diarrhea and that is when they told me to call the specialist. I just want any advice you all can give me in the meantime while I wait to go to her appointment on. The 15th. PLEASE Help.

Welcome to FBN!

I am so sorry you and Chloe are going through this did the vet at any time test for Giardia? Some do not test for it unless you specifically ask and when you say there is bloody mucus in her stool that tells me Giardia.

Where are you located you might need to seek a second opinion before the specialist?

I am in northwest Ohio. And yes they did test for Giardia. I thought about going to get another vets opinion but I am scared they are going to tell me to go see a specialist after I spend a lot more money again. My husband and I just decided to go ahead and take her to the specialist so hopefully we will get to the bottom of this and not go broke.

Sounds like a terrible ordeal for all, did you get her from a breeder?

Yes I did get her from a breeder and she has no idea what it could be? She offered me a new puppy if I returned Chloe but there is no way I could give up my baby. I am going to do everything I can to get her healthy again.

I am so sorry to hear this. Is there a good teaching hospital for vet. medicine in your area? If the specialist is of no help I'd look for that.

Oh goodness. This sounds so stressful for all. My first thoughts were Giardia and Parvo but I see Chloe was tested. Can you perhaps entice her to eat from your hand - something really really yummy that she'd most likely not turn down? Maybe some dehydrated raw patties you could break into pieces?

Froxer mom, I will give these a try. I have not heard of these? Who makes them and where can I buy?

Alice Kable, the closes teaching facility is about 3 and a half hours away from me. I hope it does not come to having to find another vet to take her to and this specialist will figure it out. Fingers crossed!!

Everyone,
On a great note I got Chloe to eat for me this evening and I coudn’t Be happier! So much weight lifted off my shoulders seeing her eat. I hope she keeps it up.

What are you currently feeding? Have you tried a bland diet? Pumpkin? Probiotics?

Stella and Chewy’s.... Pet Value is one place I know sells them, I use the duck as treats and refer to it as “doggie crack” :)

Hi!

I’m in Northeast OH too!

My pup was so sickly for 7 months from giardiasis and coccidia... horrible bloody mucous diarrhea constantly. Even started losing weight.

First vet brushed it off as nothing.

2nd vet used a different testing method and told us it was the worst case of parasites she ever saw.

Titan (my dog I’m speaking of) would not be here today was it not for my test.

May I ask which city you’re in? Maybe you’re close enough to travel to my vet. Feel free to DM me!

I know this is a trying time.

Try the bland diet... help reset the digestive tract for now!

Cbrugs, I am feeding her Hills urgent care a/d right now per the vet. I have done the bland diet when all this first started and that did not help. I started giving her pumpkin again today. She has been on probiotic propectalin for some time now.

I feed my girl frozen duck patties, raw goat's milk, and dehydrated nuggets, all by a company called PRIMAL. I can find them at several higher end pet food supply chains near me like Phydeaux, Unleashed, and Pet People.

I know Stella and Chewy's brand makes a round dehydrated patty that would very easily be broken into pieces and she could just eat right from your hand. I have also only seen these at those types of pet supply places, but maybe you can order online? You could also try to crumble it a bit and place into a stainless steel bowl and pour in a little raw goat's milk or warm water to make it more of a stew. I bet she would scarf it down. It is so difficult to see your playful pup not feeling well. It is something to try, if you able, just to see if you can get her to eat while you have to wait to see the specialist. I'm so sorry you guys are experiencing this, but Chloe is super lucky to have someone who cares so much and is trying to get relief for her.

There are other people on here who know far more than I about raw/dehydrated patties and such. Maybe they know of additional brands you could try if you cannot find the brands I mentioned and use.

I personally would stop feeding that food and get on something of high quality. If you are able to, raw is best. But some high quality kibbles are Fromm, Acana, Orijen, Zignature, Nature’s Variety, Earthborn Holistics.

The vet prescribed foods are are poor quality and nothing but fillers and can cause even more problems.

Well I went to go get some of the Stella and chewy’s patties and came home to see if she would eat and of course she would not. My husband and son just left with her to take her to the animal hospital again because she has had projectile diarrhea and shivering a lot today. I do not want to wait for Friday. She seems very sad and weak. I don’t understand what is going on here. Last night she ended up eating so good and perked up a lot from what she has been. I wake up this morning and she is back to the same symptoms. My puppy can’t be the only one who has gone through this. I miss her bark so much. She doesn’t even make a noise now. Just a little grunt here and there when she is straining to try and poop but there is nothing there to come out. I hope my husband does’t leave that vet hospital without answers. I would have gone with but I am having a really hard time seeing her like this and can’t help her. He is way stronger than I am.
