Just got new puppy - worried

I agree with Jakeyjake. If you can't get him to take in the Panacur, then ask for Metronidazole/Flagyl pills. You can try giving the pills with peanut or almond butter. But he definitely needs to get the medicine in him.

The vet that saw him Monday wasn't in today and for some reason the vet that is in today didn't want to prescribe anything without talking to that vet (WT?)

Ok. So, I guess I have to wait until tomorrow to get his medicine for him. That's frustrating.

However, now I'm concerned about something else.

I've noticed when he is running and makes a tight, fast corner he will occasionally yelp in pain - it happens about once or twice a day.

I don't know if this is something I should get x-rayed or if anything would even show on x-ray if it was just a soft tissue injury.

I think the easiest way to get him to take the Panacur would be to mix in some water with your dog kibble ( make sure it's dog kibble that he likes ) and then add the Panacur to the water and stir. He should lick up the water with panacur from the top and then eat the kibble. I don't think panacur tastes too bad. Metronidazole is very bitter so that is more of a challenge.

But, that's the thing - right now he's barely eating his kibble.

Today's update:

Went to the vet and got his antibiotics (note to self buy a large bottle of Clavamox online because holy cow that was expensive), Panacur, and an appetite stimulant for him since he is eating so-so. Today he did eat his kibble better than the previous days. Maybe he's finally getting hungry.

After that I went and got him some yummy peanut butter pill pockets thinking, certainly he would eat those. Got home and he spat it out. What gives. I smelled them. Even I would've eaten one.

I took some American Cheese though and rolled a pill up in that and that worked.

I haven't given any Panacur yet because I want to get some stinky wet food or maybe stinky baby food and see if I can entice him with something nasty like that that I wouldn't normally give him. That or I can mix it in some Dyne or vanilla pudding. I have a few ideas that I'm going to try and see what works - what he'll eat then I'll go with that.

The vet said she'd rather treat with the Panacur first than the Flagyl.

Right now I decided I'm going to hold off on x-raying his hips because he can run around, jump, play, etc and he's fine almost all the time. IF he was kenneled a lot at his previous home maybe he is overdoing it or maybe he has a minor soft tissue injury. Either way maybe something just needs to heal and I think just giving it a week or two will let me see if it does. If he continues to complain - then we need to investigate further. But, there may be nothing that an x-ray could really do for him right now that a little rest can't fix and for now I'm going to have him just try and rest a bit and not play so rough with his buddies. He may not like that idea but I think it's for the best.

So, for now we're doing the Panacur, antibiotics (14 days - wow), I'm starting some probiotics, some appetite stimulants, and then we'll be doing a repeat fecal and repeat blood panel in a couple weeks to check his liver levels.

*phew*

I would not start the panacur till you find a food or liquid to mix it with that he really likes since he has to eat the entire amount. Try canned pumpkin, chicken broth, low fat greek yoghurt, a few different brands of canned dog food, orijen brand kibble etc. You could try pureeing a solid food like sardines or beef or chicken and make it a bit liquidy with some water and add the panacur to that. But whatever you do, find something he will eat in its entirety, then next time add the Panacur to that.

The metronidazole tablet is best swallowed whole in a piece of cheese or greenie pill pocket etc since it's so bitter.

I would say the panacur is more important than the metronidazole but they do work synergistically to improve cure rate to 98% so it's best to do the treatment with both together.

Not sure why your dog is on Clavamox?? That's not for giardia, that's an antibiotic for pretty much everything else- pneumonia, bronchitis, skin infections, dental infections etc. The only thing you can get without Rx is Panacur, the Clavamox and Metronidazole need a Rx. If you want to save money you could ask for a Rx and fill online with a web site to save a bit of money.
