Hi! We are located in Arlington, Tx. We just picked up our sweet Max yesterday & he is 12 weeks old. He is puppy pad trained and we need to transition him to outdoor trained. But of course this Texas weather is being tricky.... It is cold and wet this week. So I am nervouse to take him outside while it is so cold and wet. We have him set up in a puppy playpen with a crate, potty pads, water and toys of course for when we are at work. I took him out yesterday after he ate and he peed but pooped later on the puppy pad. Today it was too wet and cold - so he used the kitchen carpet (uggg) cleaned that up and then a good poop in the puppy play pen. Any suggestions????? Am I being silly about wet and cold. He is only 9 lbs. He slept with us last night and did great. Love this site

Many Thanks,
DMHouston

Welcome to the site and looking forward in seeing pics of your baby. I would say right now since the weather is bad, just keep doing what you are doing. Once the weather gets better then you can start taking him out. He will learn in time, and Frenchies can be hard headed so don't get discouraged.

:hiya: :welcome3: to FBN!

Potty training is always a bear! We did the schedule training, when home take them out every 2 hrs, 15/20 mins after they eat and as soon as they wake up or stop playing. i never used potty pads so i am not sure , but if you are not wanting to take him out in the cold weather -- place the puppy pad near the back door to get him used to going out that way for potty

We live in the rain forest so we had no choice but to take Ralphy out in the rain lol - it rained for a solid two weeks when we first brought him home. However, persistance does pay off and I can now say that at 13 weeks old we have maybe one pee accident a day (thank goodness for hard wood floors) and we got rid of the pee pads as he wasn't using them and loved to tear them to pieces if given the opportunity!! Consistency will pay off 100% :)

Welcome!! You're doing everything right, it's really hard to get them to go outside in bad weather. Especially when they are puppies. Good luck!

Speaking as a bad-weather-ignorant Californian, I would say that as long as he's not outside for too long, it's better to start building the habit now. Getting them too attached to the puppy pads will make for a harder transition to outdoor potty later. However... I'd follow the advice of those that live in colder areas as experience tends to yield the best advice :p

I am not a fan of puppy pads myself because I find them expensive and puppies love to destroy them, but we live in CA so we don't have to deal with cold weather too much. I would still take him out first thing in the morning to pee, feed him, wait 20 mins and then take him out again to the same spot to poop. Give him lots of praise and a little treat when he goes. Once you establish a regular spot for him to go he will catch on. Goof luck and let us know how it goes.

I think, in the overall scheme of things, whatever the temp. is in Arlington, TX it would be OK for him to go out for brief periods! We are in VA, and are just coming off weeks of snow on the ground and single digit temps. Ours were getting over their paws being so cold towards the end of it. I think (and this is just IMO) that the sooner you build up a routine the better. Out immediately after they wake up, stop playing, eat, etc.

Can't wait to see pics!

Welcome! Can't help you with the housetraining thing because I'm not going to start with Bambi until April when the snow is off the ground. We brought her home in December and she hated going out when there was snow on the ground and even more so when it was raining. I hope Max picks it up quickly. Good luck!

Hello and :smileywelcome:! I got Buster is Feb. and it was cold and nasty outside and he hated going out. I got him some pullover fleeces and he was much better about going outside to potty.
