Hello friends!

Haven't posted in a while. Thought I'd pop in and share an update.

This has been Rico's first summer as a "big boy". The heat in combination with his already super tight nares has proven to really show how much he needs his nose done. He lasts only minutes on his walk before he begins to pant, and my greatest fear is the affect the difficulty breathing has on his cardiovascular and respiratory systems long term.

His vet agrees—although he doesn't perform the surgery he has recommended me to a specialist that many of Rico's fellow frenchies have actually used.

The thing that perplexes me, is that Rico is actually so much more quiet than any other frenchie I know in terms of snoring, snorting etc. his noises and difficulty breathing solely occur with excessive activity or heat. As for his palette reduction, I'm sure the determination can/will be made if he needs it when he's sedated.

At any rate, I have his pre op appointment this coming Monday and am hoping to schedule surgery for the end of August.

I also wanted to share something I never knew about his health insurance, healthy paws, that I learned through another frenchie owner in our meetup group.... they will actually make a direct to hospital payment for vet bills that are over a certain threshold—which here in NYC with a specialist, this would certainly be eligible.... lol.

All you need to do is submit preexisting medical records, have healthy paws preauthorized approval then submit a pre-surgical estimate. As long as the hospital agrees to accepting direct payment, healthy paws will call in with a credit card at the time of surgery for the bill minus of course any unsatisfied deductible and your percentage of the bill.... I was very impressed, as the surgery will fall into the 3-5K range here in NYC.

I'm excited for him to have the surgery and hopefully breathe much easier.... can't wait to see his little mushroom slice nose when it's done!! Here's a good before pic of his crazy tight nares!

Hello, stranger! Good to know you are back! Rico is handsome as ever! Buster is really quiet breathing, too, but so far he doesn't pant much on walks. It is good that you are taking care of Rico's sweet little nose!

Awww thank you so much!

Titan really needs his nares done, I agree his actual breathing snoring etc is basically non existent. But I do notice when he takes a "deep breath" to sigh? It's very broken up? Sounds like a revving motor. His poor little nose is closing up and he's not even getting a good deep breath.

He's not a very active dog, and most of his "walks" are back and forth and up and around our yard, as he can't go long distance or his back pain flares. (Can you say problem child?)

Awesome about the insurance! I just had a free 3 months from Embrace! I actually liked the policies. We are working on reading into the details and insuring both of our babes!

Good luck Rico! Your daddy will do whatever is best for you, ya little devil! ❤️

I don't know if you saw this on IG but here is a pic of Jake's before and after he had done last month. The after was one day post op. Super easy recovery. Wow 3 - 5K seems awfully high. A molar extraction and the nares for us was $1300 and my vet is quite expensive. Glad your insurance will help out!

Wow; that is a huge difference in his nostrils! I bet he is so much more comfortable. I will have to talk with my husband; he is worse than me about our dogs.

I love this little angel. He always looks particularly fuzzy. Good luck with his surgery.

Ya I waited to have it done too, but because the tooth had to come out it worked out. He sleeps on his back a lot more because he can breathe easier. He still makes his cute little grunts and groans but seems to be breathing so much better.

I did see that pic!!! How is jakes breathing now?

His nares don't look that bad, I have seen worse. How long of a walk do you go on? Even in NY it gets hot and I wouldn't go for a very long walk, unless it's early morning when it's still cool out side. Good luck with the surgery, and I hope it goes well.

When it's super hot, his walks are literally to go to the bathroom and that's it!

How do you know their breathing is bad enough to need the surgery? My pup only snorts when he's excited and he seems relatively athletic for a Frenchie. He rarely snores but in temps about 75 and above he usually starts panting within 10 minutes on a walk. He does much better in hot weather if he's just hanging out in our yard. He's very excitable on walks

Good luck Rico... you handsome devil!!

cheli had his done at around 2 yrs old, i think, can't remember exact age, but it made a big differnce for him. However, he just does not like or do well in the heat. He is good with self regulation and telling me he wants back in the house.
