Back Leg Issue

Your welcome. We follow you on IG too!
Ya Im of no help on the hip surgery. Keep us posted on her progress. We are thinking of you and lil Rosie.
I hope she likes her new food:)

Thanks again to all for the help. Still waiting to hear what the orthopedic surgeon has to say about the x-rays that were done. Trying to keep her from running too much right now and it is becoming challenging to do so. Each night she looks at me like "Are we going to play fetch?".

Here are the x-rays that i received from the vet. Not sure if anyone on here can look at them and see what is going on.

Wish I could read those for you..... sending prayers.

I would keep her on your current food and do the green bean supplement. We did this with our bulldog banks and she lost 10 lbs and then I was able to maintain that for nearly 5 yrs. Also, Honest Kitchen is an awesome product if you choose to go that route, but I think you should be good with cut back on kibble with green beans.

Also, I went through 2 knee surgeries with our other bulldog, Nitchke... torn ACL and lux patella -- he did great, but the recovery is tough on you and they can not do anything for about 4-6 weeks. as for the HD, it is prevalent in many breeds and if you give joint supplement it can help with any discomfort

Soo much love from this group and that's why i come here for advice. We started giving Rosie 3/4 cup of Orijen daily. 1/4 cup Orijen Six Fish, 1/4 cup of green beans, 1/4 cup of carrots in the morning and then a 1/2 cup of Orijen Six Fish in the evening. We were feeding 1 cup daily so we will see if she loses some but honestly i do not think she is on the chubby side at all like the vet says, but i guess its just until we see about her hips and knees. Thanks again all for the suggestions.

you can also try raw diet, the effect on weight is very obvious

also, you should not let it jump up and down again. normal running should be fine for a health bulldog, but jumping is vital to them as their back legs are weaker than front legs and the front body are very heavy

She doesn't look big to me either. Please keep us updated!

yeah I thought 25 lbs. was about average for a frenchie. Still have not heard anything from vet so I guess I will have to call them.

I agree, but my male bulldog must know that his front legs are stronger because when he jumps down from the couch he lands only on his front legs, it's SO loud! Our girl does not do this, only our little mini tank of a boy!

Rosie lands on her front legs also when jumping off of sofa. Sometimes I think she will almost do a cartwheel. Haha

***UPDATE 2/24/2016*****
Went see the orthopedic surgeon this morning so he could do his own exam on Rosie. Told me the x-rays could be deceiving on the hips so he wanted to personally check her out. His suggestions were that she would not need surgery on her hips since he did not feel anything while moving them that would suggest they are rubbing to cause issues and said they move really well. The knees are a different issue and suggested surgery on both of them at the same time. He moved the knee cap out of place which made the bottom leg bend out and said that it needed to be addressed so she does not tear her ACL or possibly worse injury. She is scheduled for surgery on April 14th and will stay there for 3 to 4 days. During this time she will do laser and water therapy and so they can monitor her better to get her back to normal quickly. It will be hard to keep her there that long but if it is for the best then we will just have to do it.

Good news on the hips!!! Good luck in the surgery in April. I hope she will heal up quickly!

Ditto!

Thanks for the update! Thinking about you guys and hope everything goes well. Is the surgery expensive or do you have insurance?

Surgery is $2,000 to $2,400 and i do have insurance but it will not cover it since i have only had it less than a year. It will be 11 months in April that i purchased VPI Insurance which i finds sucks and will not renew probably in May.

Oh that's great news about the hips! As I said before the hardest thing with the patella surgery is keeping them calm. Is she crate trained?
That sucks about the insurance too. Good luck lil Rosie:)

She never liked the crate so we never pushed the issue of her staying in it. She would actually make a mess if you know what i mean and lay in it like it does not bother her at all to do so. They will keep her for at least 3 days after surgery to do water and laser therapy and get her moving around. Yeah the insurance does sucked and wasted $450 by getting it, but live and learn i guess.

Also she weighed actually 27 lbs. and he put her on a diet to help prepare for surgery and recovery. Still wanted to put her on a special diet food to lose i think 2% body weight a week but i keep pushing the issue on keeping her on Orijen six fish and will bring it down to 1/2 cup a day and i am sure she will not like that too much. What would you all recommend i do to help her lose? Should i just get the diet food from them? Stay on Orijen but only 1/2 cup day? Need advice on this for sure and i also have some Honest Kitchen food coming in.

You will still have to limit her movement when she comes home. Once she starts feeling better she will think she can run and play as she has always done. I had to take my bully to the bathroom in the backyard on a leash to make sure he didn't go darting off. Maybe confining her in a x-pen would work when you can't be with her since she doesn't like the crate.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what food is good to help lose weight. Clearly she can't exercise the weight off with bad knees so it has to be food. Maybe MaplesMommy can help?

X-pen is a good idea if she doesn't like crates. It really sucks about the insurance. :(

Id keep her on the Orijen but feed less & try to cut down on the treats and/or only offer veggies.
Carbohydrates have more calories/sugar than meat, so just try to avoid as much carb/starch as possible.
You can always add some lean chicken if you feel she might be super hungry due to cutting down on her kibble.

Thanks MaplesMommy. So far today is the first day of giving her 1/4 cup in morning and 1/4 cup in evening and she is not showing signs of being really hungry and just the usual of staring while we eat, haha. We will also add some green beans to her food but not sure if we should get fresh and steam them or if canned would also work.

I'm sorry about her diagnosis. Bambi was diagnosed with luxating patellas but so far, so good. She will stretch her back legs a lot when she is outside and I think it is her way of putting them back in place. I would maybe get a second opinion on her weight loss. If she is 28 lbs. now and the vet wants her to go down to 20, that is a lot. Is she seriously overweight? Do you think she needs to lose 8 lbs.? I understand about relieving pressure on her hind end, however, you don't want her to be too thin. Good luck and keep us posted.
