Back Leg Issue

I'm sorry about her diagnosis. Bambi was diagnosed with luxating patellas but so far, so good. She will stretch her back legs a lot when she is outside and I think it is her way of putting them back in place. I would maybe get a second opinion on her weight loss. If she is 28 lbs. now and the vet wants her to go down to 20, that is a lot. Is she seriously overweight? Do you think she needs to lose 8 lbs.? I understand about relieving pressure on her hind end, however, you don't want her to be too thin. Good luck and keep us posted.

Mavis, I do not think she is over weight but the vet feels like she should lose some weight before surgery to help her recovery transition and eliminate pressure on legs while doing therapy.

Got it; best of luck. She is a doll.

Thanks again all for the information. Received a sample box of The Honest Kitchen Embark and she loved it so much she licked the bowl clean. Will try to give her 3/4 cup a day.

I'm fearing getting this exact same diagnosis...

I took T for a walk today (he's been on longer walks than this) and he's acting like he's stiff and limping/waddling. He's not favoring any limbs and keeping pressure on all 4s but I freaked out.

Lots of crate time for my poor boy since he's a pro at parkour on the furniture...

Dogs both have vet appts I'm hoping he's feeling by Friday afternoon especially since our vet has already felt around his knees and hips and said he seems fine beside the "loose hips" comment...

She's a breeder as well, she seemed 0% concerned. But I'm 100% freaking out!

How's Rosie doing?

Blushy, thanks for asking and Rosie is doing great so far. I try to bring her on short walks daily and no issues has happened again, but i try not to let her run around for long periods at a time. Walking and trotting around does not seem to affect her at all. She is taking Metacam right now until surgery to help keep joints lubricated. We also dropped her feedings to 1/2 cup a day to try and lose some weight before surgery also.

2 weeks of feeding 1/2 cup of food and Rosie is still at same weight. Went to weigh her today at PetSmart. Need advice since surgery is April 14th. Believe they wanted me to out her on ScienceDiet weight management and I had refused

Since you have to limit her exercise its probably almost impossible for her to lose weight...

The only thing that I can think of is if you can find a water therapy program? I know that this might be expensive but if the vet is against doing the surgery without her dropping the weight you may not have any other options...

I'm no good with diet options for weight loss unless you cut back to 1/2 a cup for breakfast, and then less at bedtime? That hardly seems fair. Honestly I'm stumped...

Actually feed her a total of a 1/2 cup a day. 1/4 cup in mornings and 1/4 cup at night. May try The Honest Kitchen Zeal flavor which has 8% fat

Oh I thought you meant 1/2 twice...

Hmm...

Just noticed Fromm makes a weight management food so will actually order that. Fromms Gold Coast grain free weight management. 25% protein, 10% crude fat, 7% crude fiber and to get to 20 lbs. it says 1 cup a day.

Well tomorrow is the big day for Rosie. Will be bringing her for 7:00am and she will stay a few days for water and laser therapy. Could use all the good vibes since this is the first time she will not be around us.

Got a call from the Vet an hour ago. Everything went great with her back legs surgery and they will keep her sedated throughout the evening. Also this morning I mentioned she snores quite a bit even when not sleeping. During the surgery he also shortened her soft palate which was longer than it should be and also did nare surgery. Looks like she has been through a lot today so we will just let her rest and go see her tomorrow. Thanks all for the good vibes and helpful information.

Love how they keep updating us on Rosie and sending pictures. Just received this one and told us how much she is enjoying all the kisses and attention. This place is great.

I'm SO glad the surgery went well!! It sounds like she's getting spoiled rotten, as it should be! :)

Vet just called me and he said he is impressed how she wants to stand up already. Sent me a couple pictures and I also wanted to show the difference in her nare surgery, before and after picture. Thank you all again and keep the good vibes coming. Might be back home on Sunday.
